Belleville Washers, Disc Springs

Disc springs, also known as Belleville washers or disc washers, are ideal for high-load applications, especially where space is limited. When your compression spring application requires high loads in tight spaces, Belleville washers can be the solution. Their tapered configuration enables them to support high loads with relatively little deflection and considerable height compared to coil springs. Belleville washers are commonly used to address vibration, thermal expansion, relaxation, and bolt creep.

Standard series disc washers are made of stainless steel. Additionally, standard series disc washers are passivated to specification to remove contaminants and further improve corrosion resistance.

Belleville Washers in Use and Stacking

Conical disc springs are made of a convex disc with the outer edge facing the center of the disc. This creates a high bounce in short-motion areas. The Belleville spring configuration allows these springs to support higher loads with relatively less deflection and less solid height than standard coil-designed springs.

For a given deflection, a single disc washer has a specific load. For the same deflection, two parallel stacks of washers will produce twice the load of a single washer; three washers will produce three times the load; four washers will produce four times the load, etc. Alternatively, two washers stacked in series will produce twice the deflection of a single washer for the same load; three washers will produce three times the deflection; four washers will produce four times the deflection, and so on. Thus, various series-parallel combinations can provide stacks with various combinations of load and deflection results. Therefore, depending on the application, designers can:

-Stacks “parallel” to increase load
-Stack “tandem” for increased deflection
-Adjust the load and deflection of washer stacks by adding or removing individual washers and/or the order in which they are used (series or parallel)
